Job Summary:
The Town of Riverview is currently recruiting for a Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention. This position reports directly to the Fire Chief. We are looking for an experienced fire service leader, capable of incident command and who is open to developing into an inspector and fire investigator with the Town of Riverview.
As a senior administrator, the success candidate is responsible for fire prevention education and inspection.
The incumbent will be on a weekly after hour rotation for on call emergency incident command. The individual shall follow the departmental chain of command, policies, procedures and guidelines.
Main Responsibilities:
Conducts routine and special fire inspections as required by the province and as directed by the Fire Chief.
Enforces the National Fire Code of Canada, National Building Code of Canada, Provincial Regulations, municipal by-laws and any other legislative regulations pertaining to the fire services.
Obtain and maintain, designation as a “Local Assistant” to the NB Fire Marshal under the Fire Prevention Act.
Oversees enforcement follow-up, review written Orders and follows up to and including court proceedings
Deals with the public and may be required to make public safety decisions with independent judgement.
Responsible to review road and infrastructure plans (new buildings, major renovations, land development) for compliance in regard to NBC of C, NFC of C, etc...
Develop and maintain an effective fire inspection cycle for low, medium, and high hazard facilities.
Must be knowledgeable in the NB OH&S programs and regulations
Manages the fire prevention/education section of the department and performs related duties.
Develop and maintain an effective fire prevention/education program for the Town, including provincial schools’ system.
May acts as the Incident Commander at emergency scenes until relieved by a senior officer.
Overseas fire prevention/education media releases and provide media interviews in accordance with departmental policies.
Prepare and maintain accurate records, statistics, reports, Fire Safety Plans and correspondences as it pertains to Fire Prevention activities. (Crysis, etc…)
Provides the Fire Chief with a Strategic Plan for short-, medium- and long-term Fire Prevention Program, including new initiatives and budget implications.
Represents management on the Town’s Joint Health & Safety Committee on a rotational basis.
Attends courses and conferences related to the Deputy Chief Fire Prevention position.
Maintains good working relationships with career co-workers, volunteers, other fire departments and outside agencies.
Understands and respects the collective agreement.
May serve as management committee member during contract negotiations and grievance management.
Serves as recruitment committee member for career fire fighters/paramedics and volunteers.
Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other Town employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
Provide supervisory support role for the Town’s Emergency Operation Organization.
Provide training to career and volunteer firefighters.
May provide training to town employees (first aid, etc).
May assume the Fire Chief duties in his/her absence.
May perform the role of project manager on fire department projects.
Performs other duties as assigned or required by the Fire Chief.
Position Requirements:
Successful completion of high school or GED.
- Current certification Fire Officer Level 2 or equivalent (Meeting NFPA 1021).
- Certified as a Level 1 Fire Service Instructor (Meeting NFPA 1041).
- Minimum of three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills and strong presentation skills.
- Valid NB Class 5 Driver’s license with Air brake endorsement.
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sectors Check to meet Town standards.
Requirements considered to be assets:
Certified Medical First Responder would be considered an asset
- Certified as a Fire Investigator (Meeting NFPA 1033) would be considered an asset
- Certified as a Level 1 Fire Inspector (Meeting NFPA 1031) would be considered an asset
