Making it Work - Local Electrician Helps Clients Meet Sustainability Goals
Al’s Electric Services is a family-run business that has been servicing the Greater Moncton Area for over 40 years. It’s run by Albert “Al” and Carol MacWilliams along with their son, Lee. This family trio has seen their company grow to what it is today, but it all started from humble beginnings.
Originally from PEI, Al and Carol decided to make the big move to Riverview back in the mid-60s.
“There were no jobs available back home. We were visiting my brother-in-law in Riverview and he told us there was work here,” explained Al. The young couple moved to Riverview and Al soon became an apprentice for George Martin, who owned and operated Star Electric Services in Moncton. “George was a great mentor. He was someone that was dedicated to his work and respected his staff, he taught me everything he knew,” he continued.
In 1980, interest rates skyrocketed to 22%. The MacWilliams, now with two young children, decided to start their own electrical service business from home. “We started off small and thankfully our wonderful neighbours were supportive,” Carol recalled. With determination, faith in their business ability and a hands-on approach to management, the MacWilliams saw their business flourish. In 1985, they moved their operations to 8 Trites Road.
The MacWilliams are also happy to help local organizations such as Riverview Minor Hockey and the Friends of the Moncton Hospital. “Community means everything to us and we are happy to help,” explained Carol “We are proud to have contributed to various Town projects such as the arena’s lower rink and installing some of the original streetlights on Coverdale Road,” Al added.
As a well-known contractor having worked on some high-profile projects in the Greater Moncton Area, one can only wonder what powers their success. The MacWilliams will tell you: “We have the most dedicated employees that we respect and are proud of,” explained Al. “All our employees have the highest regard for their work, and we hold customer satisfaction in the upmost importance.”
With a major emphasis on commercial and industrial projects, they primarily deal with new construction or re-fit while performing service work, which can include both commercial and residential jobs. They offer a broad range of energy efficient upgrades to help clients reduce their carbon footprint and meet their own goals for environmental sustainability. Notably, they were hired on in the construction of two net-zero buildings for Shediac’s Multipurpose Centre and The Government of Canada Pension Centre.
