Regular Council Meeting 

Mayor LeBlanc began the Council Meeting with a Presentation of Ranger Service Project Awards to Nara Cooke, Evelyn McDonald, and Grace MacDonald.

• Regular Council Meeting – August 12, 2024 

CORRESPONDANCE 

• On behalf of residents of Bella Casa Apartments Marjorie Sharpe has made a formal request for a Codiac Transit bus stop.  

PETITIONS, PRESENTATIONS, & DELEGATIONS 

• Presentation by Kate Hanson, Chair of the Riverview Public Library on their proposed operating and capital budget for 2025.  

NEW BUSINESS 

• Financial Summary: Mid-Year Variance Analysis (to July 31, 2024). The Director of Finance & Information Technology, Shannon Parlee, provided this mid-year checkpoint to provide a snapshot of where finances are mid-year for transparency purposes.  
• Council passed a motion to approve the proposed Budget Parameters. Providing this first review of the preliminary budget parameters ensures that staff align with Council’s objectives and goals for the upcoming budget, providing a framework for the Town’s operational activities and capital priorities throughout the budgeting process.  
• Council approved a motion to give direction to staff to explore the option of paving a portion of the Riverfront Trail. 
• Proposal to schedule an RCMP “Town Hall Session.” The Town of Riverview is planning a Town Hall session in October with the RCMP Leadership Team to do a public presentation for residents. This session will provide an overview of the RCMP’s services and ongoing activities in Riverview and the broader community, discuss current safety data and trends, will include a question-and-answer session, and more.  

COUNCIL STATEMENTS/INQUIRIES 

• Councillor Bennett brought up the question of Riverview taxpayers receiving priority when registering for swimming lessons. Director of Parks, Recreation, and Community Relations, David Shea, shared the information that swimming lesson registration is profit-generating and therefore not funded through the tax-base. The profit generated through swimming lessons benefits residents through other recreational opportunities. In addition to this the municipality operating model to be an inclusive community would be in question if operations started this exclusive treatment, which could in turn result in other recreation opportunities being lost through a drop in enrollment. The current system doesn’t support exclusive sign-up so it would also be a resource concern, and regional trends do not support a resident-priority model. The Town is aware that the true underlying issue is staffing and space, which are being addressed through the building of the new Riverview Recreation Complex. Director Shea agreed to look into possible solutions to this issue and report back to Council. 

NEXT MEETING  

Council next meets on September 16, 2024 for a Special Council Meeting with Provincial Election candidates at 6 p.m. 

The Committee of the Whole meets on September 23 at 7 p.m.
